What Is an AI Overview in Google Search?
AI Overview is a Google Search feature that uses generative AI to create summarized answers for some search queries. Google says AI features can surface links to supporting websites, but there are no special technical requirements that guarantee inclusion.
In my work with professional services firms, I treat AI Overview as a visibility signal, not a magic placement. If Google cannot clearly understand what a firm does, who it serves, and why its expertise should be trusted, the firm is harder to cite.
That is the real issue.
A traditional search result is like a directory listing. An AI Overview is closer to a short briefing placed in front of the searcher before they decide where to click.

What Is the Definition of AI Overview?
AI Overview is a Google Search result feature that uses generative AI to summarize information for some queries and provide links to sources that support the answer.
Google describes AI features in Search as experiences that help users understand information faster while still giving them links to publisher websites.
For a professional service firm, the practical question is simple: can Google connect your name, your expertise, your service category, and your proof well enough to cite you?
How Is an AI Overview Different From a Featured Snippet?
AI Overview and Featured Snippet are different Google Search features.
| Feature | AI Overview | Featured Snippet |
|---|---|---|
| Content source | Can generate a summary from multiple sources | Extracts content from one webpage |
| Format | AI-generated summary with supporting links | Highlighted excerpt from a webpage |
| Primary use | Helps answer broader or layered queries | Gives a direct answer from a selected page |
| Documentation source | Google AI features documentation | Google featured snippet documentation |
A featured snippet is closer to Google quoting one page. An AI Overview is closer to Google assembling a short briefing and pointing to supporting sources.
That distinction matters.
If your page is only written to win a blue link or a featured snippet, it may not give AI systems enough clear entity signals to understand your authority.
What Does an AI Overview Not Guarantee?
AI Overview inclusion is not guaranteed.
Google says there are no extra technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews beyond being eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google also does not state that formatting, entity language, or structured data can force inclusion.
That means nobody can honestly sell a guaranteed AI Overview placement.
What they can do is make your site clearer. Clearer expertise. Clearer services. Clearer author signals. Clearer proof.
This works best when a firm already has real expertise but the web does a poor job showing it.
How Does Structured Data Relate to AI Overview Eligibility?
Structured data helps Google understand the meaning of a page and determine eligibility for supported search features.
It does not guarantee AI Overview inclusion.
Think of structured data like labels on evidence in a case file. The labels do not win the case by themselves, but they help the person reviewing the file understand what each piece means.
For attorneys, financial advisors, consultants, and other professional experts, structured data is part of the technical foundation. It should support the substance already on the page.
Use structured data when it accurately describes the content. Skip it when it creates claims the page itself does not prove.

What Is a Simple AI Overview Example?
A user searches Google for a topic such as how to choose a business attorney for a contract dispute.
The search results page may show an AI-generated summary at the top. That summary may include general guidance and links to supporting sources.
If one attorney''s website clearly explains contract dispute experience, jurisdiction, service fit, author credentials, and related proof, Google has more usable information to evaluate.
If another attorney''s website only says "business law services," there is less to work with.
That is the gap.
Check your AI visibility before competitors become the default names AI systems repeat.
What Terms Are Related to AI Overview?
Featured Snippet
A Featured Snippet is a Google Search feature that displays a highlighted excerpt from a single webpage.
Do not treat it as the same thing as an AI Overview.
Structured Data
Structured data is code added to a webpage to help search engines understand the page content and qualify it for supported search features.
It supports clarity. It does not guarantee AI Overview visibility.
Knowledge Graph
Google''s Knowledge Graph is a system for understanding entities and relationships between entities.
For professional service firms, entity clarity matters because AI systems need to understand who you are before they can connect you to a query.
Answer Engine Optimization
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making a business easier for AI-powered search and answer systems to understand, trust, and cite.
Authority Lion uses this work for professional service firms that already have expertise but are not being clearly represented by AI systems.

What Should Professional Service Firms Do About AI Overview?
Professional service firms should treat AI Overview as a reason to make their expertise clearer across the web.
Do not chase shortcuts.
Start with the basics Google and AI systems can evaluate: indexed pages, clear service pages, named experts, specific credentials, useful explanations, accurate structured data, and third-party proof.
Choose this work if your firm has real authority but AI systems do not describe you accurately.
